CBD Oil used for Epilepsy? CBD, one of the most important cannabinoids found in hemp, has shown great potential as a remedy for several diseases, which has been instrumental in paving the way for its legalisation in several countries around the world.
It has been used extensively in recent years by people looking for a natural way of treating their health complications instead of using prescription medicine.
In addition, available research, although limited, has suggested its efficacy in managing the symptoms of several diseases, including treatment-resistant epilepsy. But is using CBD safe and effective for epileptic patients? Let’s take a look!
Is CBD Oil Beneficial For Epilepsy?
CBD oil is created by blending the CBD extracts from the cannabis sativa (hemp) plant with a carrier oil like coconut or hemp seed oil. This has been found effective in treating symptoms associated with epilepsy, although CBD isolate is also used as a popular mode of treatment.
A study published in 2019 endeavoured to evaluate the efficacy of CBD in epilepsy treatment when used in addition to common anti-epileptic drugs. This study, based on earlier research and clinical trials, suggests that the use of CBD can bring new hope for people suffering from treatment-resistant forms of epilepsy.
An earlier study conducted on children and adolescents who have refractory epilepsy found that the use of cannabis oil containing CBD and THC in the ratio of 20:1 resulted in a significant reduction in the frequency of seizures.
The completion of the first high-quality placebo-controlled trials of a purified oil-based liquid CBD preparation in patients with Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. The results of these studies demonstrate that, at a dosage of 20 mg/kg/day, CBD added on to pre-existing AED treatment is superior to placebo in reducing the frequency of convulsive (tonic-clonic, tonic, clonic, and atonic) seizures in patients with Dravet syndrome, and the frequency of drop seizures in patients with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. In the latter patients, a dosage of 10 mg/kg/day treatment was also superior to placebo.
Although more research is needed to understand the efficacy of CBD better, the results of the studies conducted so far suggest that CBD could be used as an alternative remedy to reduce the occurrence of seizures in epileptic patients, irrespective of age.
The Side Effects Of Using CBD Oil For Epilepsy
While the use of CBD for treating the symptoms of epilepsy does not show any significant adverse effect, it is not entirely safe either. CBD has been found to interact favourably with certain prescription medicines used for treating epilepsy. These include common anti-epileptic drugs like clobazam, eslicarbazepine, rufinamide, zonisamide, topiramate, etc. See our article for more information on which drugs should not be taken with CBD.
While some negative interactions have been observed, these can be easily resolved by altering CBD doses or the other drugs in question. But since more research is required to understand the interaction mechanism between CBD and anti-epileptic drugs, it’s too early to conclude that CBD cannot be used effectively in association with the drugs mentioned above to reduce epileptic seizures.
Can CBD oil be used for Epilepsy?
As far as current research is concerned, CBD can be used effectively in association with usual anti-epileptic drugs as a treatment against symptoms of epilepsy. But, it is best to conduct the treatment under constant monitoring by experienced medical professionals to track the interactions between the two drugs.
Taking advice from professionals will ensure that one can take the necessary steps to avoid any adverse effects arising from such interactions.
