CBD Oil for Dogs?

CBD Oil for Dogs?

CBD Oil for dogs? CBD oil has become a massive success as an alternative treatment for various issues, including stress, anxiety, and pain management. Limited research studies also seem to show that CBD oil may be effective as a treatment for some ailments suffered by our dogs.

Our dogs or pets may experience body pains from a disease, after undergoing surgery, stress and anxiety based on their surroundings or changes, and other ailments such as inflammation, bones, and joint pains related to age. CBD oils may indeed help ease these symptoms and relieve our dogs discomfort and suffering.

What does CBD oil do?

CBD or cannabidiol oil is an extract from the cannabis plant which is further processed in factories. This cannabinoid is found naturally in marijuana or hemp plants. CBD does not contain large amounts of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which gives marijuana its psychoactive properties. Therefore, most CBD-infused products are extracted from the hemp plant and not from marijuana.

Much like in humans, CBD, when ingested by dogs, interacts with the endocannabinoid receptors of the nervous system. CBD influences these receptors and enhances the muscular, immune, and cardiovascular systems and, through it, the homeostasis of our pet’s bodies. The result helps in maintaining the overall health of our dogs.

Is it safe to give my dog CBD Oil?

CBD oils as an alternative treatment is still a new venture being tested out by industries, pharmaceutical companies, and buyers. While there is evidence of its benefits in helping people and pets, more research is required for definitive scientific data to treat dogs. However, CBD oils are used by dog owners to help manage pain, especially neuropathic pain, as well as to control seizures.

CBD is also used for its anti-inflammatory properties, cardiac benefits, anti-nausea effects, appetite stimulation, anti-anxiety impact, and as an anti-cancer measure, although more conclusive data is required.

Most dog-owners use the natural remedy, the CBD oil, as an effective painkiller, anti-inflammatory, anxiety reducer, and overall booster for body and fur health. It also thought to help in alleviating and improving joint and bone health.

Effective Painkiller

Dogs may feel body aches after surgery or injuries due to fractures or even age. When used regularly, CBD oil may help manage pain and treat chronic diseases in dogs.

Anti-Inflammatory

The chemical content of CBD oils makes them an effective anti-inflammatory substance. In addition, it is used to enhance the immune system and its response to different physiological factors. A study in which dogs received 2mg/kg of CBD every 12 hours (or a placebo) for the pain symptoms of osteoarthritis for 4 weeks with a 2 week washout, saw ‘a significant decrease in pain and an increase in activity’ in the dogs who had been taking CBD as opposed to the dogs who took the placebo. The findings of the study found that 2mg/kg of CBD daily can help increase comfort and activity in dogs with osteoarthritis.

Anxiety Reducer

Dogs are known to be sensitive creatures, being able to sense emotions and feel in a similar way humans do. So naturally, this also includes feeling anxiety or stress due to external or internal factors. CBD oil helps to calm agitated pets and helps them relax, improving their health.

In a study on pet behaviours, pet owners were asked to review the behaviour of their dogs over a 14 day period of time following consumption of a CBD soft chew ‘dosage form treat.’ After 14 days, behaviours such as anxiety, separation anxiety, panic when riding in cars, incessant scratching showed a significant improvement. The study concluded that 2 weeks, twice daily dosage of this CBD soft chew had the potential to decrease negative behaviours in dogs.

Healthy Skin and Fur

Dog-owners would know how hard it is to maintain the shiny fur coat and healthy skin of their pets. Even a slight lack of nutrition, or allergens, or parasites like fleas and ticks, can damage the skin and fur of dogs. CBD oil is often prescribed as a natural and gentle remedy to improve skin and fur health.

How fast does CBD work in dogs?

The general consensus is that it takes between 20 minutes to 1 hour for the effects of CBD to be felt in mammals. Weight, height and other factors will play a role in CBD absorption and effects.
